Baby Steps
Somedays are more difficult than others, to that, I think we can all agree and relate on some sort of level. However, I am particularly talking about procrastination and laziness here today because I recognize those as my greatest obstacles. When it comes to starting a new project, or tackling a bug in my code, or even writing these articles, I tend to push them away and focus on other things. Intimidated by the red lines no longer, for now I have a strategy! Do one thing.
It sounds simple, and it really is, but it is effective. All you have to do is one little thing. So for example, I set a daily goal to work on my Devslopes Academy course. Keeping it broad, I allow myself extra flexibility. So on those days where I hit a wall, I can lean on my practice of doing one thing.
Now don’t get confused, I literally mean one thing. Write your name at the top of your essay. Open the book and read one line. Write one line of code. I’m telling you, it works wonders. Because sure, you might at first just do the one thing. But that feeling of ‘I could do better’ will linger and pester you until you do something about it. So you dive in for a second attempt at whatever project you may be working on, and in this moment, you have gone above and beyond your expectations, rallying even more determination to vanquish your menacing project.
“Most people overestimate what they can achieve in a year and underestimate what they can achieve in ten years.” -Bill Gates
I will always be learning something new. So I am grateful that I know how I learn, and for being able to recognize my obstacles.
